Pre-prohibition ads & posters

Classic beer posters including rarities

Prohibition beer posters are of course the classic collectible. Prohibition gave birth to a wide variety of rhetoric from both sides. While many pro-Prohibition propaganda may not be of much interest to beer collectors, it really ought to be. The anti-beer coalition made numerous silly and manipulative claims about beer and there were many interesting rhetorical flourishes to their campaign.

Pro-prohibition propaganda included claims that Prohibition would keep teens away from alcohol and there is the famous pamphlet print with women pointing to the words “Lips that touch alcohol shall not touch ours.’ The joke there is that many of the joyless-looking women were not all that kissable in the first place.

On Prohibition’s other side, of course, there are many interesting pro-alcohol campaigns. The great protest in 1930 that saw California men picketing down the street with uniformly vehement signs saying ‘We Want Beer’ is just one example of what you might find in pro-beer posters and ads.

The modern era of beer ads
There are other examples of excellent rare and very collectible beer posters. Depending on your sense of humor or interest, these are quite enjoyable or novel including images that are now considered racist and sexist. We have seen an Iroquois beer poster from the 1940’s, posters that acclaim the ability of beer to 'get women' and much more.

Beer brand posters
Of course, there are many standard brand posters and beer ad posters from the more recent past. Many of these are also very collectible of course. Many people consider the ‘60’s and ‘70’s vintage eras in beer posters. Before stricter regulations there were many great ads for beer that you would never see in magazines today. In the classic ‘70’s era of subliminal advertising, there were many very strongly sexual posters and ads for beer. Looking through our collection of beer posters and ads you will find many classic slogans and graphics related to the great beer brands. These include Schlitz beer posters, Miller beer posters, Budweiser beer posters and ads and many, many others.

Previous to that the classic era of early advertising (think Mad Men here, of course) created numerous still-interesting campaigns, claims and content.
